Chief Executive expresses condolences on death of Mr Lee Kuan Yew
*********************************************************

The Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, today (March 23) sent the following condolence message to the Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Hsien Loong, on the death of the former Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, which is excerpted below:

"It is with great sadness that I write to you, on behalf of the people and Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, to express our profound condolences on the passing of the great statesman, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the Founding Father of Singapore.

Mr Lee's integrity, tenacity, vision and drive laid the most solid foundation possible for the impressive economic development, prosperity and social harmony that epitomises Singapore today.

Singapore and Hong Kong have long been partners for each other in the pursuit of excellence and we continue to look to Singapore as a close friend. This year, Singapore celebrates its 50th anniversary of independence. The man who was the central player in making that happen has sadly taken his untimely leave. But his legacy of how to build a thriving, proud, diverse and dynamic country will live on for generations, not just in Singapore or Asia, but the world over. He will be truly missed.

We join the people of your nation during this period of national mourning and reflection."
