The popular and colourful oncidium, commonly known as the "dancing lady", will be showcased as the theme flower at the upcoming Hong Kong Flower Show, bringing its vibrant colours to the event. Also this year the flower show has launched a mobile application (app) featuring show information and fun features for the further enjoyment of visitors.
The flower show will be held for 10 days from March 20 to 29 from 9am to 9pm daily in Victoria Park, with "When Blossoms Dance" as this year's main theme.
About 8 000 pots of oncidium will be on display at the showground. Oncidium is a perennial herb of the genus Oncidium in the family Orchidaceae. Indigenous to the tropical and subtropical countries of America, such as Mexico, Brazil and Bolivia, the family includes more than 700 native species. With its slender stem, oncidium is unique, adorable and full of vitality, and is commonly called the "dancing lady".
The highly ornamental oncidium is one of the most popular orchids. Though commonly seen in yellow, the flowers also come in a wide array of colours including magenta, apple green and pink, sometimes with dark brown patterns or blotches. Some species are strongly aromatic. The blooming period varies from species to species and generally lasts for up to three months.
The flower show's mobile app is now available via Google Play and Apple App Store for free download. With the app, members of the public can get updates about the show and play interactive games in the showground. They can also have a chance to redeem a souvenir while stocks last.
