LegCo President concludes his visit to Japan (with photos)

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

     The President of the Legislative Council (LegCo), Mr Jasper Tsang, concluded his five-day visit to Japan today (March 13).

     On the last day of his stay in Tokyo, Mr Tsang visited the Shin-Koto Incineration Plant (the Plant) to learn more about waste treatment facilities in Japan. He also stopped at the adjacent Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome which utilizes the heat energy generated from the Plant to maintain a stable indoor temperature.

     Before departing for Hong Kong, Mr Tsang concluded that his visit was very fruitful in further strengthening the bilateral relations between the Legislatures of Hong Kong and Japan.  

     Apart from visiting the National Diet and meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Nobutaka Machimura. Mr Tsang also met with a number of members of the Diet, including members of the Japan-Hong Kong Parliamentarian League, to exchange views on issues of mutual concern.  He also held a lunch meeting with State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Mr Minoru Kiuchi, whom he discussed Hong Kong's recent constitutional developments. During the trip, Mr Tsang paid a courtesy visit to the Acting Ambassador and Minister of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Japan, Mr Han Zhiqiang, and met with some 80 Hong Kong people living in Tokyo.

     Mr Tsang spoke to Japanese business leaders at a forum organized by Keidanren (Japanese Business Federation) and to foreign and local journalists at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan. In addition, Mr Tsang gave a TV interview to Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK, Japan Broadcasting Corporation), which was aired during their prime time that evening.

     During this visit, Mr Tsang also visited the Ukishima Solar Power Plant and Nissan Oppama Plant to understand Japan's latest developments in renewable energy generation and industrial automation. He also had a lively discussion with the students of Senior High School at Otsuka, University of Tsukuba, when he introduced the education system in Hong Kong.

     Finally, Mr Tsang expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan for their visit invitation and gracious hospitality throughout the trip.
