*******************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (February 17) the February 2015 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

Apart from providing up-to-date statistics, this issue also contains two feature articles entitled "Consumer Price Index and Its Movements in 2014" and "The Profile of Persons Residing in Private Elderly Homes in 2014".

"Consumer Price Index and Its Movements in 2014"

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the changes over time in the price level of consumer commodities and services generally purchased by households. The year-on-year rate of change in the CPI is widely used as an indicator of the inflation affecting consumers. This feature article analyses the movements in the CPI series in 2014 and their comparisons with recent years.

The annual rate of change in the Composite CPI for 2014 maintained at around 4%, broadly similar to 2012 and 2013. Upon removing the effects of all government's one-off relief measures, there were different degrees of moderation in the increases in indices of most sections of commodity and service.

Apart from presenting the movements of the overall indices in recent years, this feature article also analyses price changes at various commodity/service section levels.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Consumer Price Index Section, C&SD (Tel: 2805 6401).

"The Profile of Persons Residing in Private Elderly Homes in 2014"

A survey was conducted by C&SD during July to August 2014 to collect the age-sex profile of persons residing in private elderly homes (PEH). Results of the survey together with some other administrative records are used in the General Household Survey to estimate the age-sex profile of the land-based non-institutional population of Hong Kong. This feature article gives a brief account of results of the 2014 round of PEH survey.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Social Analysis and Research Section, C&SD (Tel: 2887 5208).

Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing about 140 tables. It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong. Topics include population; labour; external trade; National Income and Balance of Payments; prices; business performance; energy; housing and property; Government accounts, finance and insurance; and transport, communications and tourism. For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available.
