The following is issued on behalf of the Commission on Youth:

The Commission on Youth (CoY) held a Youth Exchange Session at the Youth Square today (February 9). The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, attended the session and exchanged views with youths on the topic of "Method for Selecting the Chief Executive by Universal Suffrage".

Mrs Lam said that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government understands that constitutional development is an extremely controversial issue, and that different groups and people may have different views towards constitutional development. It is the common aspiration of the Central Authorities, the HKSAR Government and the people of Hong Kong to successfully implement universal suffrage as scheduled and in accordance with the law, so that 5 million eligible voters could elect the next CE in 2017 through "one person, one vote".

In her concluding remarks, Mrs Lam said she was glad to see the proactive engagement of many young people in the forum. The Government hopes that different sectors of the community could, under the Basic Law and the framework laid down by the Decision adopted by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress on August 31, 2014, discuss in a rational and pragmatic manner and forge consensus, so as to establish a suitable system of universal suffrage in Hong Kong.

The Chairman of the CoY, Mr Bunny Chan, said the CoY will continue to organise exchange sessions and invite representatives from the Government and advisory bodies or stakeholders on topics of concern to attend so that youths will have more opportunities to exchange views with them.
