Police concluded a one-week territory-wide pedestrian safety campaign yesterday (January 27). Through education, publicity and stringent enforcement actions, pedestrians, in particular the elderly, were reminded of the importance of road safety.
A total of 154 verbal warnings and 1 399 summonses were issued to pedestrians failing to comply with road safety regulations during the campaign conducted from January 21 to January 27.
During the campaign, Police issued 1 140 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 114 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge/pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge/pedestrian subway, and 60 summonses for jay walking on any roads.
Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams had distributed 8 500 publicity leaflets at 241 locations across the territory and appealed to the public to comply with road safety regulations.
"Pedestrians are reminded to take care and to cross the road safely. Those who fail to comply with the law may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000," a Police spokesman said.
