************************************************************

Two correctional officers were assaulted and injured by a male remand person in custody at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre yesterday (January 27).

At 4.24am, the 55-year-old remand person in custody was found to have fallen on the floor in his cell. Two officers thus entered the cell to conduct physical examination on the remand person in custody but the latter suddenly turned emotional and swung his arms. The two officers immediately stopped the remand person in custody. However, he punched the face of one of the officers and bit the left arm of the other officer. Reinforcing officers responded to control the remand person in custody at once. OC foam was subsequently used to subdue him after warnings.

The remand person in custody and two injured officers were sent to the centre hospital for examination. The remand person in custody suffered injury on his face, neck and arm and was referred to a public hospital for further treatment. The two officers who suffered injuries on the face and the left arm respectively attended a public hospital for further examination upon the instruction of the medical officer of the centre hospital.

The Correctional Services Department has reported the case to the Police for investigation.

The remand person in custody was remanded for the offence of obtaining property by deception.
