Acclaimed shakuhachi (Japanese flute) maestro Fukuda Teruhisa will collaborate with samisen (Japanese lute) performer Kineya Shiho and versatile local musician Chan Ming-chi for two recitals in February next year.
The trio will perform different programmes in the two recitals, which will be held at 2.30pm and 7.30pm on February 7 (Saturday) at the Xiang Hai Xuan Multi-purpose Hall in Nan Lian Garden, offering audiences different yet equally enjoyable performances. In the matinee performance, Fukuda will perform "Sokaku Reibo" and "Koku", and join Kineya and Chan in the Hong Kong premieres of "Meikyo", "Kaze no Uta" and "Incense Laudation" (excerpt).
In the evening recital, they will perform "Sinkyorei", "Sika no Tourei", "Incense Laudation" (excerpt) and the Hong Kong premieres of "Interference No.9" and "Ichijyo".
Fukuda Teruhisa has performed in many music festivals, concerts and recitals since 1986 and collaborated with many orchestras, including the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Russia Symphony Orchestra, the Kaohsiung City Chinese Orchestra and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Chinese Orchestra. He has premiered nearly 100 new shakuhachi music pieces, and is acclaimed as the pioneer of shakuhachi new music. In 2002, he established the society Hougaku Hijirikai with composer Tamba Akira under the theme "tradition and renovation". The society organises performances and talks in Tokyo and Paris every year.
Kineya Shiho studied nagauta (a form of Japanese classical music) and later contemporary Japanese music and samisen. She has consistently performed in modern music concerts and workshops organised by the Japan Federation of Composers and the National Theatre of Japan, and worked with composers to explore and develop the samisen performance technique. She has been invited to perform in Russia, Kazakhstan, the US and Canada.
Chan Ming-chi studied music composition in the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and the Elizabeth University of Music, and finished his post-doctoral programme at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He was associate professor of the Tainan University of the Arts and professor of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. His works are often performed in festivals of contemporary music globally.
"Shakuhachi Recital by Fukuda Teruhisa" is part of the Nan Lian Garden Music Series presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets priced at $240 are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for full-time students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for the Nan Lian Garden Music Series and the group booking package.
There will be a meet-the-artist session after the matinee performance (conducted in Japanese with Cantonese interpretation) and a post-performance demonstration talk (in Cantonese) to be held at 2.30pm on February 8 (Sunday) at the Lecture Hall of the Jao Tsung-I Academy. The talk will be hosted by Chan Ming-chi with demonstrations by Fukuda Teruhisa. Admission is free with limited seats available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Other programmes in the Nan Lian Garden Music Series include "Guzheng Recital by Wang Zhongshan" (January 9 and 10) and "Guqin Recital by Li Mingzhong and Li Cun" (January 17).
