Hong Kong Customs yesterday (December 21) arrested two outgoing passengers at Hong Kong International Airport and seized about 2.37 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine with a market value of about $1 million.

The two suspects, a 48-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman who claimed to be a driver and an unemployed person respectively, were about to depart for Sydney, Australia, when they were intercepted by officers of the Customs Drug Investigation Bureau during an anti-drug operation at the airport. Suspected methamphetamine was found on the male suspect and the pair were arrested.

The male suspect was charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and will appear at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (December 23). The woman is on bail pending further investigation.

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offence and the maximum penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.

Hong Kong Customs will continue to strengthen enforcement work and enhance intelligence exchange with overseas law enforcement agencies to combat transnational drug trafficking activities.
