Daily flight movements hit new record

A total of 1 178 flight movements were handled at the Hong Kong International Airport on December 20, setting a new daily record, a spokesman for the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) said today (December 21).

The 1 178 flight movements broke the previous single-day record of 1 172 flight movements set on March 29 last year and exceeded the daily average of 1 073 movements recorded in 2014 by 9.8 per cent. Moreover, 685 flight movements also operated through the Hong Kong Flight Information Region on December 20, making up a total of 1 863 flights handled by the CAD within the 24-hour period.

The increase in flight movements was attributed to the high demand during the Christmas and New Year holidays. The extra flights were operated to destinations in Northeast and Southeast Asia. Taipei was the most popular destination, followed by Seoul and Bangkok.

"The CAD's Air Traffic Management Division has deployed additional staff to cater for the seasonal demand and is always committed to ensuring safe and efficient air traffic service to the travelling public," the spokesman said.
