Voluntary Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme extended to microwave ovens
*********************************************************

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) today (December 18) extended the voluntary Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme to cover microwave ovens. Manufacturers, importers and local agents of microwave ovens are invited to join.

The EMSD launched the voluntary scheme in 1995. To qualify for this type of energy label, the product should meet the scheme's energy efficiency performance requirements. With the inclusion of microwave ovens, there are now 22 types of household and office appliances covered by the voluntary scheme.

In addition, five types of household appliances are required to be attached with energy labels under the mandatory Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme introduced under the Energy Efficiency (Labelling of Products) Ordinance in 2009.

Through the display of energy efficiency information, the scheme helps consumers to make informed choices in purchasing energy-efficient products. It also encourages manufacturers and suppliers to market more energy-efficient products, thereby saving energy.

Information about the scheme is available on the EMSD's website  (www.emsd.gov.hk/emsd/eng/pee/eels_vlntry.shtml
). Enquiries can be made through the scheme's hotline at 2808 3465 or by email to eepublic@emsd.gov.hk.
