Additional screenings of "Restored Treasures" war films "Paths of Glory" and "All Quiet On The Western Front" (with photos)

The "Restored Treasures - First World War Centenary" series, presented by the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, has received an enthusiastic response and all tickets for the period from August to January have sold out. Consequently, additional screenings of Stanley Kubrick's "Paths of Glory" (1957) and Oscar winner for Best Picture and Best Director "All Quiet On The Western Front" (1930) will be held on January 18 at 7.30pm and January 25 at 2pm at the HKFA Cinema respectively.

Widely considered one of the greatest anti-war film of all time, Lewis Milestone's "All Quiet On The Western Front" features a group of German schoolboys being coerced into enlisting by rhetoric-spewing teachers. Facing inhuman conditions in the trenches as well as disease, hunger and imminent death, they see no glory but only wasteful human slaughter in war. The film has been restored by Universal Studios with 4K scanning. Colour-correction, scratch removal and mono sound editing were applied.

"Paths of Glory" is perhaps cinema's most scathing indictment of military absurdity, epitomised by the huge divide between officers and enlisted men. The UCLA Film and Television Archive re-recorded and cleaned up the film's soundtrack, also producing a new magnetic track master and a new optical track negative. The final restored version was produced from two prints that formerly belonged to the director to ensure the contrast and density of the new prints is correct.

Tickets for the additional screenings priced at $50 are now available at URBTIX. Half-price concessionary tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 and above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients. Telephone credit card bookings can be made on 2111 5999, or on the Internet at
