SED starts duty visit to Nanjing (with photos)
**********************************************

The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, today (December 5) arrived in Nanjing for a three-day duty visit.

Mr Ng paid a courtesy call on the Vice Director-General of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, Professor Ding Xiaochang. He also met with the Chairperson of the Jiangsu Youth Federation, Ms Wan Wenhua. Mr Ng exchanged views with the two leaders on issues of mutual concern, including history education, vocational education and student interflow activities.

Mr Ng then met a group of Hong Kong students currently studying in Nanjing. He encouraged the students to study diligently and build up networks in both Hong Kong and the Mainland so that they could put what they have learnt to good use in various positions for the betterment of Hong Kong and the nation at large.

Since 2012, some Mainland higher education institutions have admitted Hong Kong students based on their results in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination, thus exempting them from taking the Joint Entrance Examination for Universities on the Mainland. In 2015, the number of institutions joining the Scheme for Admission of Hong Kong Students to Mainland Higher Education Institutions has risen to 78. Three of them are in Jiangsu Province, namely Nanjing University, the Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine and Nanjing Normal University.

As of October 2013, the number of Hong Kong students studying in Mainland higher education institutions exceeded 14,000.

Tomorrow (December 6) Mr Ng will accompany more than 260 students and teachers from Hong Kong secondary schools to participate in the Mainland exchange activities of "Passing on the Torch" Platform Programme Series: An Exploration into the History and Culture in Nanjing.
