The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, visited the Central/Western District Environmental Hygiene Office of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) at Sheung Wan Municipal Services Building this afternoon (December 4) to learn more about the front-line work of the FEHD and inspected fixed-pitch hawker areas in the district.
The visit started with a meeting with the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene, Miss Vivian Lau, senior management of the department and front-line officers. A briefing was given to Mrs Lam on the services provided by the department in the district on environmental hygiene, cleansing, pest control and management of hawkers and markets. She was also briefed on the implementation progress of the Assistance Scheme for Hawkers in Fixed-pitch Hawker Areas launched in June last year by the FEHD.
During the meeting, Mrs Lam chatted with front-line officers to learn about the challenges and achievements of the various sections of the department in their course of duty. She commended FEHD staff for their tireless efforts in improving the public hygiene conditions and encouraged all colleagues of the department to continue to do their utmost to provide and maintain a clean and hygienic living environment for the public.
Accompanied by Miss Lau, Mrs Lam then visited Li Yuen Street East and Li Yuen Street West to see the progress made there under the Assistance Scheme. Mrs Lam noted that the stall relocation and reconstruction work in these two fixed-pitch hawker areas had been completed, achieving the objective of reducing fire risks. Stall operators have also taken the opportunity to improve their stall design to provide a better shopping environment for the public. While touring the areas, Mrs Lam chatted with stall operators and thanked them for their support in ensuring the smooth implementation of the Assistance Scheme.
