LCSD to hold hip hop and jazz dance talks

     Three locally acclaimed hip hop and jazz dancers - Angela Hang, Hongboy Chan and Rock Fong - will hold four dance appreciation talks in December and January next year.

     The trio will introduce audiences to hip hop and jazz dance history and development, showcasing the dance styles that were founded in the US and have become popular with youngsters. The first two lectures will begin with history and introduce different styles of hip hop dance, including breaking and boogaloo. The third and fourth lectures will explore how jazz dance absorbs characteristics from ballet, musical dance, contemporary dance and street dance and how it evolved its unique dance step. Videos will be shown in the lectures to present the characteristics of the two dance genres.

     The lectures will be conducted in Cantonese and will start at 8pm at the Rehearsal Room of the Yuen Long Theatre. Details are as follows:

     Angela Hang is a graduate of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where she majored in contemporary dance. She was awarded an Asian Culture Council scholarship to attend the American Dance Festival in North Carolina, and in 1994 she studied at the Ballet Art School in New York. She has also received extensive training from other major dance groups in the US including the Alvin Ailey School, the Martha Graham School and the Broadway Dance Centre. She has many followers who admire her dynamic and unique dance style as well as her dedication and eagerness to teach and nurture students.

     Hongboy Chan is a member of Hong Kong beat boy crew Rhythm Attack. Since 2000 he has toured the US, Germany, Japan, Korea and the Mainland. He has competed with the world's top dancers and won numerous awards including Adidas Dance champion and Beijing's Happy Valley Street Dance Battle.

     A graduate of the Chinese University of Hong Kong majoring in physical education and sports science, Rock Fong is a well-known dance instructor and choreographer in Hong Kong and specialises in freestyle hip hop. Fong has trained frequently in the US and has performed widely. He has also conducted dance workshops in Norway and Singapore.

     "Lecture Series on Appreciating Hip Hop and Jazz Dance" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets priced at $50 per lecture are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A 10 per cent discount is offered for a single purchase of four talks.
