According to the results of the 2013 Annual Survey of Economic Activities - Transportation, Storage and Courier Services Sector released today (November 20) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), the transportation, storage and courier services sector's total receipts (comprising business receipts and other income) amounted to $499.6 billion in 2013, representing an increase of 2.8% compared with 2012; on a per establishment basis, total receipts increased by 6.3% over 2012 to $19.6 million in 2013.
Operating expenses and compensation of employees of the sector altogether amounted to $443.7 billion in 2013, representing an increase of 2.1% over 2012; on a per establishment basis, they increased by 5.5% compared with 2012 to $17.4 million in 2013.
Gross surplus of the sector, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses and compensation of employees, increased by 9.0% compared with 2012 to $55.9 billion in 2013; on a per establishment basis, gross surplus increased from $1.95 million in 2012 to $2.20 million in 2013. Gross surplus accounted for 11.2% of total receipts in 2013, up by 0.6 percentage point compared with 2012.
Value added of the sector, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, increased by 5.1% compared with 2012 to $120.8 billion in 2013; on a per establishment basis, the value added was $4.7 million in 2013, which increased by 8.6% compared with 2012.
According to the survey results, it was estimated that the sector comprised some 25 400 establishments and engaged about 221 800 persons, or an average of 8.7 persons per establishment, in 2013.
Within the transportation, storage and courier services sector, the five largest industry groupings in terms of value added in 2013 were (1) air transport and service activities incidental to air transportation, (2) land passenger transport, (3) other transportation support activities, (4) land freight transport, and (5) service activities incidental to water transportation. They together accounted for 84.6% of the value added of the sector.
In the air transport and service activities incidental to air transportation industry, total receipts amounted to $144.3 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $122.5 billion in 2013. Gross surplus increased from $18.6 billion in 2012 to $21.8 billion in 2013, accounting for 15.1% of total receipts in 2013. Value added increased by 11.8% compared with 2012 to $45.7 billion.
In the land passenger transport industry, total receipts amounted to $47.3 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $33.7 billion in 2013. Gross surplus increased from $13.2 billion in 2012 to $13.7 billion in 2013, accounting for 28.8% of total receipts in 2013. Value added increased by 4.9% over 2012 to $26.1 billion.
In the other transportation support activities industry which comprised mainly cargo forwarders and shipbrokers, total receipts amounted to $124.1 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $117.9 billion in 2013. Gross surplus increased from $5.5 billion in 2012 to $6.2 billion in 2013, accounting for 5.0% of total receipts in 2013. Value added increased by 2.3% compared with 2012 to $14.7 billion.
In the land freight transport industry, total receipts amounted to $18.3 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $16.3 billion in 2013. Gross surplus decreased from $2.2 billion in 2012 to $2.0 billion in 2013, accounting for 11.1% of total receipts in 2013. Value added increased by 3.0% over 2012 to $7.9 billion.
In the service activities incidental to water transportation industry which included container terminal operators, mid-stream operators as well as operators engaged in container freight stations and vanning and devanning, total receipts amounted to $15.0 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $10.3 billion in 2013. Gross surplus decreased from $5.5 billion in 2012 to $4.7 billion in 2013, accounting for 31.2% of total receipts in 2013. Value added decreased by 8.5% compared with 2012 to $7.8 billion.
