The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, met with a delegation led by the Vice-Governor of Fujian Province, Mr Zheng Xiaosong, in Hong Kong this morning (November 19).

The Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, led a delegation to visit Fujian Province in January this year and held a meeting with the Secretary of the CPC Fujian Provincial Committee, Mr You Quan. Both sides agreed to enhance co-operation between Fujian and Hong Kong. Subsequently, the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government and the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office (HKMAO) of Fujian Provincial People's Government conducted follow-up discussions on the mode and scope of co-operation.

At today's meeting, Hong Kong and Fujian agreed on the setting up of a Hong Kong/Fujian Co-operation Conference. The Conference will be led by the Chief Secretary for Administration and the Vice-Governor of Fujian Province responsible for commerce and Hong Kong and Macau affairs respectively.  Both sides also agreed that the first meeting will be held in Fujian in late January next year.  At the Conference, the two sides will discuss ways of enhancing financial, economic and trade co-operation as well as other areas for medium- to long-term co-operation.

The Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau of the HKSAR Government and the HKMAO of the Fujian Provincial People's Government will be responsible for the daily liaison and co-ordination work of the Hong Kong/Fujian Co-operation Conference respectively.

"Fujian is the main entity of the Haixi economic zone. The establishment of the Hong Kong/Fujian Co-operation Conference will elevate the co-operation and exchanges between Fujian and Hong Kong to a new level. I am looking forward to seeing the strengthening of co-operation in economic, trade and financial areas and discussing the medium- to long-term co-operation in other areas during my visit to Fujian in January next year. I also hope to learn more about the latest economic and trade development of Fujian through the visit," Mrs Lam said.

Joining Mrs Lam in the meeting today were the Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Raymond Tam, and other representatives from the relevant bureaux.
