Following is the speech by the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, at the cocktail reception for the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong Cultural Centre at the Auditoria Building of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre this evening (November 7):

On this happy occasion, I would also like to say a few words in English. I am delighted to be here with you tonight to commemorate with you all the 25th anniversary of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and attend the Celebration Concert presented by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.

Since its opening in 1989, the Cultural Centre has staged more than 18 000 performances of various art forms showcasing the talent of renowned artists and performing companies at home and abroad, attracting over 15 million in audiences. These magnificent performances not only broadened the vision of our audience, but also enriched our cultural life and fostered cultural exchanges. Over the past 25 years, the Cultural Centre has witnessed the growth of many local performing companies and arts practitioners. It undoubtedly plays an important part in the promotion of arts and culture in the territory.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the Cultural Centre, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has arranged a series of special programmes and commissioned new works by local performing groups and artists. In tonight's Celebration Concert, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra will perform some of the greatest music ever composed, with more than 200 home-grown music talents. A rich array of music, dance and theatre programmes as well as exhibitions will also be offered to the public for free in the Cultural Centre's foyer and piazza tomorrow afternoon.

On behalf of the Hong Kong SAR (Special Administrative Region) Government, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the many artists, experts and arts practitioners who have rendered tremendous support and valuable advice to the Cultural Centre in the past 25 years. May I also take this opportunity to thank our colleagues in the Cultural Centre who have dedicated their efforts working on stage and behind the scenes. Their consistent diligence and devotion to duty over the years have contributed to the provision of quality services which create the best environment for artists to conduct their performances and give the audience and all of us the best experience.

Lastly, I wish the Celebration Concert a huge success and all of you a memorable and enjoyable evening. Thank you very much.
