Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, on the wage claims of ATV employees today (October 17):
Secretary for Labour and Welfare: We are very concerned about this case. In fact, the Labour Department has been following up this case and we have received request for help from several employees of ATV. We are liaising with these employees and if sufficient evidence has been established, we won't rule out the possibility of prosecution. But I understand that the management is trying their very best to solve its cash flow problem. At the end of the day, I think it's important for ATV to sort out its financial problem and also to pay out the outstanding wages as soon as possible. It's their responsibility.
Reporter: So should the staff be prepared that they are losing their job at the end of this month?
Secretary for Labour and Welfare: I think it's important for them to look at the whole thing realistically. I think it's more important for the management to really sort out its financial problem and discharge its responsibility under the Employment Ordinance.
