A correctional officer was injured at Stanley Prison yesterday (September 27) for stopping a fight among persons in custody.
At 9.56am, nine persons in custody, aged 21 to 47, started a fight for minor issues at a garment workshop. Officers at scene tried to stop them but in vain and therefore called for reinforcement. The 52-year-old male officer had sustained injury to his forehead by a plastic chair during the chaotic situation. After the arrival of reinforcement staff, the persons in custody were separated by the officers.
All persons in custody engaged in the fight and the staff were examined and treated at the centre hospital. The staff and a 28-year-old person in custody, who had injuries on his head and chest, were transferred to public hospitals for further treatment. The other persons in custody were slightly injured and did not need to be transferred to public hospitals.
The staff and the person in custody were discharged from public hospitals after treatment. The person in custody has returned to the prison.
The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.
The nine persons in custody were sentenced for the offences including trafficking in dangerous drugs and murder.
