Our Community in Silhouette of Community Oral History Theatre Project to be staged in Tai O
******************************************************

The finale performance Our Community in Silhouette (Tai O version), which is part of the Community Oral History Theatre Project - Islands District (Tai O), will be staged in Tai O on October 25.

The Community Oral History Theatre Project - Islands District (Tai O) is co-organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), Chung Ying Theatre (CYT), the Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council (NAAC) and the Hong Kong Heritage Conservation Foundation, and was launched in March 2013. Through organising a series of workshops, the project aims at gathering personal experiences and valuable recollections of the elderly in Tai O, writing scripts with the oral history information that is collected, and providing an opportunity for the elderly to act out their stories on stage themselves. Through this project, the organisers hope to encourage the elderly to actively participate in arts and cultural activities. It is also hoped that young people can gain an understanding from these performances by elderly people of how the older generation grew up, and reflect on their own lives as a result.

Our Community in Silhouette (Tai O version) will be staged at 2.30pm on October 25 (Saturday) at the Tai O Community Centre. The performance tells of a fishing village built by Tai O fishing families that stands proud for several centuries with its culture of hard work until its defeat by environmental pollution. Since the 1950s, Man Kwong Photographic Studio's "lady photographer" Ms Pang Sau-yung and "daughter photographer" Ms Hoong Wai-lan, as well as a photojournalist, recorded many family memories in Tai O through family pictures and documentary photography. Today, Hoong still keeps many of the old pictures and negatives. Whenever she meets an owner of the negatives, she will return them, hoping to stir a few memories among the drifting boat dwellers.

Free admission tickets for the oral history theatre performance Our Community in Silhouette will be distributed at the following locations from September 25 onwards. There is a limit of four tickets per person. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis with free seating.
