Customs foils suspected smuggling of latest smartphones and integrated circuits at Lok Ma Chau Control Point (with photos)

     Hong Kong Customs smashed a smuggling case at Lok Ma Chau Control Point yesterday (September 22) and seized a total of 255 smartphones, including the latest models such as 20 iPhone 6 devices and nine iPhone 6 Plus models, and also 930 integrated circuits, with a total value of about $0.68 million.

     Customs officers intercepted an outgoing container truck with a trailer and two 20-foot empty containers for inspection at Lok Ma Chau Control Point yesterday afternoon. The suspected goods were found concealed in three altered axles of the trailer. The 56-year-old male driver was arrested and has been put on bail. The truck and the trailer were seized for further investigation.

     Under the Import and Export Ordinance, the maximum penalty for attempting to export unmanifested cargo is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
