Hong Kong artist Mr Danny Yung was awarded the Arts and Culture Prize of the Fukuoka Prize 2014 in Fukuoka, Japan, today (September 18) for his contributions to the development of Asian arts and culture.
The Principal Hong Kong Economic and Trade Representative (Tokyo), Ms Sally Wong, congratulated Mr Yung on receiving the award and thanked the Fukuoka Prize Committee for according Mr Yung and Hong Kong this special recognition and honour.
Ms Wong said, "Hong Kong is a free and open cosmopolitan city where different cultures from the East and the West meet. The people of Hong Kong appreciate the importance and benefits of cultural exchange. The Fukuoka Prize is a meaningful and commendable project, as it helps to increase awareness of the value of Asian cultures and reminds us of their diversity and vibrancy."
She added, "I would also like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for Mr Yung's contributions in the promotion of the arts and culture in Asia, including the promotion of cultural exchange between Hong Kong and Japan."
Mr Yung collaborated with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Tokyo in 2012 to stage the "Tian Tian Xiang Shang" statue exhibition in Tokyo and host a workshop in Iwate Prefecture for primary school students.
As a founding member as well as co-artistic director of Zuni Icosahedron, Mr Yung has dedicated himself to experimental arts and has created many productions in different media, from theatre to animation, film and video as well as visual and installation art. He is also dedicated to promotion of the arts in Hong Kong and overseas.
Ms Wong was in Fukuoka today to attend the Fukuoka Prize award ceremony and a reception organised by the Fukuoka Prize Committee.
The Fukuoka Prize was established in 1990 to honour outstanding achievements by individuals, groups and organisations in preserving and nurturing the unique and diverse cultures of Asia.
