SLW visits Kwai Tsing District (with photos)
********************************************

The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, visited Kwai Tsing District this afternoon (September 16) to exchange views with local District Councillors, and to visit a kindergarten/child care centre and a newly arrived family in the district.

Accompanied by the District Officer (Kwai Tsing), Mr Alan Lo, Mr Cheung first met with the Kwai Tsing District Council Chairman, Mr Fong Ping, and over 20 members of the Council at Kwai Hing Government Offices to exchange views on district needs and issues of concern.

Mr Cheung then proceeded to Yan Chai Hospital Tung Pak Ying Kindergarten/Child Care Centre in Shek Lei Estate, where he was received by the Chairman of Yan Chai Hospital's Board of Directors, Mrs Susan So, and the school's principal, Ms Decky Wong. He was briefed by Ms Wong on the school's operation and how newly arrived students adapt to school life. He toured the campus and noted that the school also provides occasional child care services as well as extended hours child care services.

To better understand the adaptation of newly arrived families in Hong Kong, Mr Cheung paid a home visit to a household in Shek Yam East Estate. The mother of the family moved to Hong Kong with her son to reunite the family two years ago, and experienced problems of isolation, low-esteem and difficulties in finding jobs owing to communication problems and lack of a social network when she first arrived.

Mr Cheung learnt that with the assistance of the Social Welfare Department she joined various small group activities, some of which are specially arranged for new arrivals, which broadened her horizons and helped her develop new skills and establish her own social network. Mr Cheung was pleased to hear that she has gradually adapted to living in Hong Kong. Taking into account her wish to find employment and look after the family at the same time, Mr Cheung encouraged her to make good use of the services offered by various social welfare organisations, and also introduced her to the Labour Department's employment services.
