Blood Transfusion Service announces incident related to blood donors' data

     The Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) today (September 3) announced an incident related to blood donors' data:

     The BTS collected blood at a commercial company yesterday (September 2). Upon return to the BTS Headquarters after the completion of the blood collection activity at around 6.30pm, the staff on duty noticed that the document holder designated for the Blood Donation Registration Forms (BDR Forms) was missing. A thorough search including at the blood collection venue was conducted but to no avail. The BTS reported the incident to the Police this morning and was informed that the document holder was found and taken to the Police at around 10pm last night by a member of the public. The BTS confirmed that all the BDR Forms were intact. The incident was reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office through the Advanced Incident Reporting System. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data has also been informed.

     The BTS would like to apologise to the company and donors concerned and pledges to seriously review its logistics for collecting and transporting documents containing personal data in order to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.
