SFH visits local aquaculture and crop farms (with photos)
*********************************************************

The Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man, this afternoon (August 25) visited aquaculture and crop farms in the New Territories to see for himself the latest developments of the local aquaculture and agricultural industries. He also met with operators of aquaculture, hydroponic and organic farms to listen to their views on the further promotion of local aquaculture and agriculture.

Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for Food and Health (Food), Mrs Marion Lai, and representatives of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), Dr Ko first went to look at some oyster rafts in Lau Fau Shan to familiarise himself with the raft culture method adopted by many oyster farmers in recent years. He then went to Mai Po to visit two aquaculture farms which have been recognised under the Accredited Fish Farm Scheme launched by the AFCD.

Dr Ko next toured a hydroponic farm in Fanling to learn more about advanced water cultivation technology for the farming of leafy vegetables in greenhouses. He also visited an organic farm in Ta Kwu Ling, one of a number of farms participating in the AFCD's Organic Farming Support Service, which was established in 2007. The farm, well-equipped with large greenhouses and potting sheds, is adopting advanced research and technology in developing modern organic farming methods.
