Hong Kong Oratorio Society to perform Mozart and Mendelssohn masterpieces in September (with photo)

     The Hong Kong Oratorio Society will stage a concert titled "Music Prodigy: Mozart & Mendelssohn" in September, with Chan Wing-wah as music director and conductor and Vivian Ip as guest conductor. The programme will feature Mozart's "Litaniae de venerabili altaris sacramento in E-flat, K243" and Mendelssohn's "St Paul: Part II", with the Hong Kong Strings in accompaniment.  

     Chan Wing-wah was formerly Professor of Music and Associate Dean of Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 2009 he was invited to become a member of the Chinese Musicians Association. He is currently Chairman of the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong. During his career he has composed musical works under various themes, including eight symphonies, other orchestral and chamber works, and choral music, with seven symphonies being released on CD. Chan's music has regularly been performed overseas, and he regularly conducts both Chinese and Western orchestras and choirs.

     Guest conductor Vivian Ip is currently studying Orchestral Conducting with Uroš Lajovic at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, and she is also music director of Chorus Delicti Wien. Ip graduated from the Music Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong with first class honours.  With a Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship, Ip then studied  at Indiana University Bloomington, where she attained a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting. As a singer, Ip has performed with maestros such as Riccardo Chailly and Riccardo Muti. In 2011 she came fourth in the sixth International Competition for Young Choral Conductors and won a special prize for most authentic performance.

     The Hong Kong Oratorio Society (HKOS) was founded in 1956 and is one of Hong Kong's most active choirs and has a long history. The HKOS repertoire covers oratorios and major choral works by classical and contemporary composers, including the masterpieces of Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart and Mendelssohn.  The choir has performed under the batons of many famous conductors in collaboration with various professional orchestras.  The choir has also performed on many tours overseas and in many major cities on the Mainland.  

     Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Music Prodigy: Mozart & Mendelssohn" concert will be staged at 8pm on September 13 (Saturday) at the Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall.  Tickets priced at $140, $120 and $100 are now available at URBTIX.  Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).  A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for the group booking package.
