Judicial appointment

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

     The Judiciary today (June 13) announced the appointment of the Honourable Mr Justice Ian Charles McWalters, Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court, as Justice of Appeal of the Court of Appeal of the High Court. The appointment will take effect from June 16, 2014.

     The appointment is made by the Chief Executive on the recommendation of the Judicial Officers Recommendation Commission.  

     The biographical note of the Honourable Mr Justice McWalters is as follows:

     Mr Justice McWalters was born in 1951 in Australia. He obtained a B.A. and LL.B. from the University of Sydney in Australia in 1972 and 1975 respectively. He was admitted as solicitor in New South Wales, Australia, in 1975 and as barrister and solicitor in Papua New Guinea in the same year. He was admitted as barrister and solicitor in the Australian Capital Territory in 1994 and as barrister in Queensland, Australia, in 2001. He was called to the Bar in Hong Kong in 2002 and appointed as Senior Counsel in 2005. He joined the then Legal Department as Crown Counsel in 1985. He was promoted to Senior Crown Counsel in 1988, to Deputy Principal Crown Counsel in 1994, and to Principal Government Counsel in 2006. He took up the post of Director of Public Prosecutions in 2009. He was appointed as Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court in February 2011.
