The Education Bureau (EDB) today (June 12) announced that the part for Primary 1 to 6 of the Basic Education Curriculum Guide (Primary 1 to Secondary 3), which was prepared by the Curriculum Development Council and published in 2002, has been updated in 2014.
Based on "Learning to Learn", the theme of the curriculum reform, the Guide (2014) draws on the valuable experiences and achievements of schools and catches up with the latest developments of our society, such as increasingly diverse social values, a growing emphasis on the ability to co-operate with people and handle interpersonal relationships, further integration of technology into living and learning, and greater diversity in student backgrounds. It offers recommendations and flexibility for school-based curriculum adaptation in the best interests of students.
The updated guide is enriched with strategies and examples of effective learning, teaching and assessment practices.
The Chairman of the Curriculum Development Council, Professor Kenneth Young, said, "The updated guide gives recognition to the endeavours and the achievements of schools in the curriculum reform. It also invites schools to build on their strengths, to reflect on their prior experiences and to face ongoing challenges, so as to develop their whole-school curriculum according to the Learning Goals and the framework. Furthermore, it encourages schools to deepen their understanding and the positive effect of the reform, to focus on reviewing the process and effectiveness of learning and teaching, and to sustain the quality of student learning in schools. In short, it fosters and strengthens the culture of professional collaboration, sharing and learning among our schools with a view to achieving the noble aim of 'Learning to Learn'."
The updated Guide (2014) continues to make recommendations on areas such as whole-school curriculum planning and the four key tasks, as well as learning and teaching strategies, resources and assessment, which curriculum leaders and teachers can refer to and reflect on so that they can move with the times.
The updated Guide (2014) (Chinese version) has been uploaded to the EDB Homepage (www.edb.gov.hk/tc/curriculum-development/doc-reports/guide-basic-edu-curriculum/index.html), to be followed by the English version soon. Unlike the previous practice of distribution of printed copies to the schools, only online electronic versions are available.
Two identical briefing sessions for the school heads, deputy school heads and curriculum leaders of primary schools will be conducted in mid-June 2014 to introduce the updated Guide (2014), share with primary school curriculum leaders the outcomes and experiences of the curriculum reform and explore the way forward for whole school curriculum development.
A Summary of the Guide (2014) (Chinese version) introducing the key messages and major updates has also been uploaded to the EDB website for the reference of schools and the public (www.edb.gov.hk/tc/curriculum-development/doc-reports/guide-basic-edu-curriculum/index.html).
