Exchange Fund Abridged Balance Sheet and Currency Board Account
********************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority:

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced today (May 30) that the total assets of the Exchange Fund amounted to HK$3,050.1 billion as at April 30, 2014, HK$45.9 billion higher than that at the end of March 2014.  Foreign currency assets increased by HK$28.1 billion and Hong Kong dollar assets increased by HK$17.8 billion.

The rise in foreign currency assets was mainly due to an increase in unsettled purchases of securities, valuation gains on foreign currency investments and an increase in foreign currency assets connected with the issuance of Certificates of Indebtedness.  The rise in Hong Kong dollar assets was mainly due to placements received from Fiscal Reserves and HKSAR government funds and statutory bodies.

The Currency Board Account shows that the Monetary Base at the end of April 2014 was HK$1,258.7 billion, increased by HK$3.0 billion, or 0.2 per cent, from the end of March 2014.  The rise was due to an increase in the outstanding amount of Certificates of Indebtedness.

The amount of Backing Assets increased by HK$2.8 billion, or 0.2 per cent, to HK$1,353.7 billion.  The rise was attributable to an increase in assets connected with the issuance of additional Certificates of Indebtedness.  The backing ratio decreased from 107.58 per cent at the end of March 2014 to 107.54 per cent at the end of April 2014.
