**********************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) made the following update today (May 23) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) carriers in a medical ward:

One more 83-year-old male patient is confirmed as carrier of NDM carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae today but without clinical symptoms.  He is now being hospitalised under medical surveillance and isolation in stable condition.

Contact tracing is in progress.  The QEH will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation of the ward.  The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up. The Infection Control Team of the hospital is now conducting investigation to ensure whether there are any connections among this case and previous ones.
