The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) received notification this afternoon (May 16) from Schindler Lifts (Hong Kong) Ltd, a lift maintenance contractor, on a rope breakage incident involving Lift No. 3 at the Tuen Mun Hospital Rehabilitation Block on May 8. The EMSD is investigating the incident.

The EMSD's preliminary findings revealed that subsequent to the replacement of all the eight suspension ropes of the lift, one of the ropes was broken on May 8 due to improper installation. No one was injured in the incident. The contractor replaced the broken rope and resumed operation of the lift on May 9 after inspection and testing. The contractor also completed inspection of three other similar lifts in the Block and confirmed that they operate safely.

The EMSD has issued a warning to the contractor on the need for prompt reporting of any rope breakage incident. It will also reflect the contractor's performance in the contractors' performance rating to be announced quarterly. If there is any evidence of contravention of the Lifts and Escalators Ordinance, the EMSD will take follow-up action in accordance with the legislation.
