Initial findings show false information not involved in complaint on electors' registered addresses

A spokesman for the Registration and Electoral Office (REO) said today (May 15) that the REO has followed up a complaint on the registered addresses of electors of the Eastern District Council Nam Fung Constituency, which alleges that there are nine cases involving unclear registered addresses of electors, and four cases involving an address with over a certain number of registered electors or more than a certain number of surnames. According to preliminary information gathered thus far, there is no prima facie evidence that the provision of false information is involved.

"The REO has approached all of the nine households whose registered addresses are suspected to be unclear and found out preliminarily that there are ambiguities in the registered addresses of three of the households. The REO is assisting the electors concerned to update their addresses.

"On the four cases involving an address with over a certain number of registered electors or more than a certain number of surnames, the REO has not detected anything suspicious after approaching the households concerned. But a few electors are found to have passed away or moved away from the registered addresses. The REO will follow up to update the registration records, "the spokesman said.

"It also comes to the attention of the REO that some electors in the cases are not residing at the addresses concerned for various reasons. The REO is following up with the people concerned.

"The REO issued a letter on May 13 to all the electors mentioned in the complaint to remind them that they violate the relevant electoral laws if they deliberately provide false information in relation to voter registration," the spokesman said.

The spokesman added that it is an offence to vote at an election if the elector knows that he/she is not entitled to do so.
