The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, visited Tai Po District this afternoon (May 15). She visited Carmel Holy Word Secondary School as well as Ways for Plastic Recycling and the Fung Yuen Nature and Culture Education Centre operated by the Environmental Association, and also met with members of the Tai Po District Council.
Accompanied by the District Officer (Tai Po), Mr Bassanio So, Mrs Lam first visited Carmel Holy Word Secondary School. In addition to enjoying a performance by students, Mrs Lam was briefed by the Principal, Mr Kwok Wing-keung, on how the school, by positioning Life Education as the core of education, provides students with learning experiences according to their different stages of growth through moral education, civic education and extra-curricular activities. She also met with teachers, students and parents to learn more about the achievements of Life Education in the school.
Accompanied by the Director of the Environmental Association, Dr Yau Wing-kwong, and Mr So, Mrs Lam then visited Ways for Plastic Recycling operated by the Association to understand its efforts in promoting waste recycling in the district. Mrs Lam, who is also the Chairman of the Steering Committee to Promote the Sustainable Development of the Recycling Industry, chatted with the Environmental Protection Ambassadors working in Ways for Plastic Recycling to learn about their work as well as the services provided by the recycling centre for recycling plastic waste, old household electrical appliances and glass containers. Ways for Plastic Recycling raises the environmental awareness of local residents and encourages active participation in waste recycling through a credit reward system, under which the residents can redeem daily necessities items with credit earned through practising recycling.
Mrs Lam then proceeded to the Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve, which is the first butterfly conservation area in Hong Kong, and visited the Fung Yuen Nature and Culture Education Centre located in the Reserve. With support from the Environment and Conservation Fund, the Environmental Association started to conduct habitat management and ecological monitoring in Fung Yuen in November 2005 for the conservation of butterflies. The Education Centre features a training centre, an exhibition room and an organic garden where exhibitions, eco-lectures and guided tours are organised for the promotion of ecological and rural culture conservation education.
The visit was concluded with a meeting with members of the Tai Po District Council to hear their views on local development and issues, including traffic and transport, rural affairs, constitutional development, housing and community planning.
