Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Princess Margaret Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Princess Margaret Hospital made the following update today (May 12) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of patients who were confirmed as carriers of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) in a medical ward:
 
     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has performed contact tracing and confirmed two more male patients (aged 73 and 86) as carriers of VRE without clinical symptoms. Both have been transferred to the isolation ward for further treatment and are in a stable condition.
 
     The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.
