Hotels to promote food waste reduction in their restaurants (with photos)
************************************************************

As part of efforts under the Food Wise Hong Kong (FWHK) Campaign, more than 30 hotels have pledged to launch a new initiative to disseminate the food waste reduction message in their restaurants starting from Mother's Day tomorrow (May 11), and encourage everyone to cherish their food on this meaningful day.

The initiative, a collaboration between the Environmental Protection Department and the Hong Kong Hotels Association (HKHA), was unveiled at a FWHK publicity event for Mother's Day at the Royal Pacific Hotel and Towers today (May 10). Certificates of appreciation were also presented to the participating hotels, which are helping to launch the initiative by displaying Food Wise menu stands displaying food waste reduction messages and a "Big Waster" graphic at their food outlets. In this way diners will be politely reminded to reduce food waste.

Presenting the certificates of appreciation to the participating hotels at the event, the Under Secretary for the Environment, Ms Christine Loh, said that the Environment Bureau released "A Food Waste and Yard Waste Plan for Hong Kong 2014-2022" in February and is determined to reduce food waste by 40 per cent by 2022, adding that the support of the whole community is of the utmost importance to achieve this target. She thanked for the hotels for their support and called on more hotels and eateries to follow suit.

During today's event, the hotel's chef, joined by Ms Loh and the Executive Director of HKHA, Mr James Lu, put on a cooking show using food trimmings and leftovers. Representatives from Greeners Action and Food Angel also showed their support and shared green tips on food waste reduction. Big Waster, a popular character who symbolises food wastage in the FWHK Campaign, wore an apron to help out during the event.

The FWHK Campaign was officially launched in May last year to encourage the whole community to avoid and reduce food waste generation in Hong Kong. Under the campaign, over 340 organisations have signed the Food Wise Charter, pledging to put into practice food waste reduction in their daily operations. The Food Wise menu stands will demonstrate the efforts of the hotel signees to further promote food waste reduction.
