The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced today (May 7) that in view of notifications from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) that outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza were detected in various parts of the Republic of Korea since January this year, the import of poultry meat and products (including poultry eggs) from the country will be banned with immediate effect for the protection of Hong Kong's public and animal health.

A CFS spokesman said, "We will continue to closely monitor information issued by the OIE on the avian influenza outbreaks and the latest situation in the country."
