Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band Annual Concert to showcase band favourites

     The Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band (HKYSB) of the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will showcase an array of band favourites in its annual concert, titled "Sinfonia Voci•Wind Symphony", at 3pm on May 6 (Tuesday) at the Auditorium of Tsuen Wan Town Hall.

     The Music Director of the Hong Kong Oratorio Society (HKOS), Professor Chan Wing-wah, will be the guest conductor to lead guest performing groups the HKOS and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Students' Union Choir, together with the HKYSB, to perform Nigel Hess' "To the Stars!" and David Holsinger's "Sinfonia Voci - I Sing the Mighty Power of God!".

     Under the batons of conductors Pak Wing-heng, Lee Sing-wan and Kevin Ling, instructors of the Music Office, 80 young musicians will perform various band music pieces including Thomas Doss' delightful "Romania Overture"; Austin Yip's "Maze", on the feelings of a protagonist wandering in a maze; Bert Appermont's "Rubicon", which is about war; and Puccini's "Turandot - Selections from the Opera".

     Instructor of the Music Office Dr Darren Ho will be the clarinet soloist to perform Frank Ticheli's "Concerto for Clarinet and Wind Ensemble, 3rd Movement" while Janice Ho will perform as the soloist in Carl Maria von Weber's "Concertino for Oboe and Winds in C Major".
    
     The HKYSB has successfully nurtured several generations of young musicians since its establishment in 1978 and currently has 80 members aged 12 to 25. The band has performed with distinguished guest musicians and bands in Hong Kong and overseas, including the Central Band of the United Kingdom Royal Air Force, the Tanunda Band of Australia, the Regimental Band of the Green Jackets, and youth bands in Canada, Japan, Australia, the Philippines and Singapore. The band has also performed under the batons of many noted conductors such as Bruce Pearson and Dr Vondis Miller from the United States, Eric Banks from the United Kingdom, Felix Hauswirth from Switzerland and Li Fangfang from Beijing.

     Tickets priced at $80, $60 and $40 are now available at URBTIX. Half-price concessions are available for full-time students, people with disabilities and their minders, senior citizens aged 60 and above and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
