Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, on a case of alleged abuse of an Indonesian domestic helper today (April 11):
Reporter: Mr Cheung, can you tell us about Erwiana's case? The process, how is it now? What is the main thing that you are focusing on?
Secretary for Labour and Welfare: The Government attaches great importance to this particular case. In fact, the Labour Department has consulted the Department of Justice, and on the basis of their advice, prosecution has been instituted against the employer for contravening provisions of the Employment Ordinance for wage offences and holiday offences. The case will be heard on April 29. We are now following up on the case, but because legal proceedings have already commenced, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further on that particular case. Suffice for us to say that we attach great importance to protecting the interests and rights of foreign domestic workers in Hong Kong.
