The International Organization for Standardization (ISO)/International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Joint Technical Committee 1/SubCommittee 27 (SC 27) Meeting opened in Hong Kong today (April 7). This is the first time that this international meeting on information security standards has been held in Hong Kong.
Over 300 security experts from more than 30 economies are attending the meeting, which is hosted by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) from today until April 15.
SC 27 creates and manages standards in the area of information security, including the globally recognised ISO 27001 and ISO 27002 standards, which specify information security management system requirements and provide best practice recommendations on information technology security management.
The SC 27 Meeting consists of a plenary session and a series of working group meetings. Delegates will discuss and collaborate on the development of standards encompassing generic methods, techniques and guidelines to address both security and privacy issues. Discussion topics include cloud computing security, identity management, encryption and other security mechanisms.
The Government Chief Information Officer, Mr Daniel Lai, and the convenor of SC 27 Working Group 1, Professor Edward Humphreys, officiated at the meeting's welcome reception today.
"We are most honoured and delighted to host the SC 27 meeting in Hong Kong. As the Government's advisor on information security, the OGCIO strongly supports and encourages the adoption of international security standards and best practices in the industry," Mr Lai said.
Riding on the presence of many international information security experts in Hong Kong, the OGCIO and Cyberport will jointly organise an International Conference on Information Security Standards on April 11. Comprising keynote addresses and discussion panels, the conference brings together local and overseas experts to share experience and exchange views on cyber security techniques and protection of data and privacy.
