Transcript of remarks by SLW on industrial accident
***************************************************

Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, on an industrial accident today (March 25):

Secretary for Labour and Welfare: We are very concerned about this very serious accident which resulted in two deaths. I would like to convey my particular condolences to the families of the two deceased workers. We are looking very closely into the circumstances and the reasons for this accident. And, in fact, the gondola - the working platform - is subject to the control and regulation by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department. But we will certainly step up our efforts to impress on all contractors, all employers and employees to remind them to be doubly more careful, particularly when working at height, because in the first three months of this year, up to today, eight fatal accidents (eight fatalities) have already happened for the construction industry, and this is worrying. We need to step up education, publicity and enforcement on all fronts.

Reporter: Is there any lack of supervision over using belts?

Secretary for Labour and Welfare: We are investigating closely into the reasons and circumstances of this accident. This is a pretty rare accident, but we need to really establish the reasons for it. And of course, if we find out the reasons for it, we will do what we can, of course, to stop these accidents from happening again. This is a very serious accident.
