The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, started his visit to the United Kingdom on March 3 (London time) by first touring the waste-to-energy facilities to keep abreast of the development of technology applications in treating waste.
Mr Wong toured two waste-to-energy facilities, namely the Advanced Plasma Power's pilot plasma gasification plant in Swindon and the New Earth Solutions' pyrolysis and gasification plant in Avonmouth, Bristol, and was briefed by the operators on the technology and daily operation of the plants.
The Swindon plant, which has been in operation for a few years, is a small pilot plasma gasification plant for clients to test their pre-sorted waste or refuse derived fuel (RDF) and provides a detailed analysis of the output. Its operation capacity is two tonnes per day.
The Avonmouth plant, newly commissioned in 2013, employs pyrolysis and gasification technology to turn the RDF produced into electricity and heat. Its operation capacity is 350 tonnes per day.
Mr Wong will continue his visit to London on March 4 (London time).
