The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, today (March 3) expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Principal of the Hong Kong Shue Yan University Dr Chung Chi-yung from illness.

"Dr Chung devoted her energy to education and service to the community all her life. She and her husband, President Dr Henry Hu, single-handedly founded the Hong Kong Shue Yan University in the spirit of 'nurturing benevolence and cultivating virtue' embedded in traditional Chinese culture, and selflessly provided generations of students with more opportunities for post-secondary education. I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Chung, and I extend my most sincere condolences to Dr Hu and his family," Mr Ng said.

The Hong Kong Shue Yan College was granted the university title in 2006 to become the first private university in Hong Kong. Through the untiring efforts of Dr Chung and Dr Hu, the university has since developed into a higher education institution with more than 10 departments offering diversified programmes to a student population of more than 5 000.

"Dr Chung made selfless contributions to the promotion of post-secondary education development. I am convinced that the great educator's spirit of educating everyone irrespective of background will live on, and that all the staff of Shue Yan University will continue to be inspired by her enthusiasm for education in nurturing more talent for Hong Kong," Mr Ng added.

The Government awarded Dr Chung the Gold Bauhinia Star in 2000 in recognition of her contribution to educational work.
