The two-day "Electrical and Mechanical (E&M) Trades Expo - Manpower Recruitment" was launched at VTC Kwai Chung Complex today (February 28), offering more than 1,000 vacancies in various positions from trainees to technical personnel. Job seekers will be able to submit applications on the spot.

Officiating at the launch ceremony were the Secretary for Development, Mr Paul Chan; the Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Mr Frank Chan; and the Director of Apprenticeship of the Vocational Training Council, Mrs Carrie Yau.

Mr Paul Chan said, "In the coming years, the annual volume of construction works in the E&M industry will exceed $30 billion. From a broader perspective, the Government's investment in public works projects is expected to be above $70 billion a year. Together with the construction projects of private corporations, railway projects and the target of large housing production, the annual construction output in the coming five to seven years is estimated to be about $150 billion on average. The prospects for the development of the E&M industry are great."

Also speaking at the ceremony, Mr Frank Chan noted that the growth in the number of engineering projects in Hong Kong has brought many development opportunities for the E&M trades. He said the trades cover a wide range of work including many facilities we use in our daily life such as lifts, railways, electrical supply systems, fuel gas supply, water supply and sewage discharge, communication systems, air-conditioning, lighting, electrical products and even fire services systems and medical equipment. He encouraged youngsters who are interested in the industry to seize the opportunity to develop their careers.

The Expo was organised by the Hong Kong Electrical and Mechanical Trade Promotion Working Group. A total of 17 E&M organisations are participating in the event, with some exhibition booths giving an introduction to the industry and others offering on-spot recruitment. There are also career talks for visitors to learn more about the industry, employment prospects and advancement opportunities.

The Expo also provides details on the technician trainee training programme offered by the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Department, the Pilot Training and Support Scheme organised by the Vocational Training Council, and the on-the-job training subsidy programmes run by the Construction Industry Council. Those interested are encouraged to take part in these study and in-service training courses.

The Expo is being held at the Assembly Hall, 2/F, VTC Kwai Chung Complex, 13-19 San Kwai Street, Kwai Chung (MTR Kwai Fong Station Exit A), from 10am to 4pm today and tomorrow. Admission is free. For details, please visit the Expo website (www.emengineering.com.hk).
