The Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene has ordered a light refreshment restaurant in Yuen Long to suspend business for 18 days.

The operator repeatedly breached the Food Business Regulation by illegally extending the food business area and allowing staff to prepare food in open space.

The restaurant, located at shop No. 20 on the ground floor of Kuen Yick Building at No. 18 Chun Yin Square, was ordered to suspend business from today (January 30) to February 16.

"Between July 2011 and October 2012, a total of six convictions on the breaches were recorded against the food establishment," a spokesman for the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) said.

"A total fine of $11,000 was levied by the court and 75 demerit points were registered against the licensee under the department's demerit points system. The contraventions resulted in the cancellation of the licence," the spokesman said.

The licensee lodged an appeal to the Licensing Appeals Board and the Municipal Services Appeals Board, which decided to suspend the licence for 18 days in place of cancellation of the licence.

The spokesman reminded licensees of food premises to comply with the Food Business Regulation, or their licences could be suspended or cancelled.

Licensed food premises are required to exhibit a sign, at a conspicuous place near the main entrance, indicating that the premises have been licensed. A list of licensed food premises is available on the FEHD's website (www.fehd.gov.hk/english/licensing/licence-type.html).
