The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, and District Council (DC) chairmen and vice chairmen started their visit to Beijing today (January 10).

The delegation first visited the National Museum of China, then called on the Minister of Civil Affairs, Mr Li Liguo, to exchange experiences in community building.

In the afternoon, the delegation was received by the Vice-President, Mr Li Yuanchao, at the Great Hall of the People. Mr Tsang said that DCs are primary councils with wide representation. They collect public views and foster consensus on the district level and have been playing a pivotal role in assisting the SAR Government in its smooth implementation of its policies.

He added that the SAR Government would further enhance collaboration with DCs. Apart from reserving $100 million for each DC to carry out signature projects to meet local needs, the SAR Government would actively follow up on views collected at the Summit on District Administration held earlier, putting forward and implementing proposals to strengthen district administration and to further enhance the role of DCs.

In the evening, the delegation attended a dinner reception hosted by the Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, Mr Wang Guangya. Members will continue the visit to Beijing in the morning tomorrow (January 11) and will set off for Tianjin in the afternoon.
