The Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Paul Tang, visited the Transport Department this afternoon (January 10) to learn more about the work of the department and to take the opportunity to meet its staff.

Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Raymond Wong, Mr Tang first visited the Hong Kong Licensing Office located at United Centre in Admiralty, where he met the Commissioner for Transport, Mrs Ingrid Yeung. He said he was pleased to learn that the department is committed to providing the world's best transport system which is safe, reliable, efficient, environmentally friendly, and satisfies both users and operators.

Mr Tang toured the Licensing Office and was briefed on various vehicle and driver licensing services provided by the Office, including registering and licensing motor vehicles, and issuing, renewing or cancelling vehicle or driver permits/licences. He also met front-line staff to better understand their daily work.

Mr Tang, accompanied by Mrs Yeung, then proceeded to the Emergency Transport Co-ordination Centre located at Immigration Tower in Wan Chai, where he was briefed by departmental staff about its operation. The Centre co-ordinates public transport measures during serious traffic or transport disruptions. It works closely with other government departments and public transport operators in collecting latest traffic and road situation information and carries out appropriate co-ordination action and responses as well as developing traffic and transport contingency plans.

Before concluding his visit, Mr Tang met the directorate staff of the department, and was briefed by Mrs Yeung on the work and daily operation of its different branches. Mr Tang then chatted with staff representatives of various grades at a tea gathering to exchange views on relevant issues. He said he greatly appreciated colleagues' efforts and encouraged them to continue providing efficient, professional and high-quality services to the public.
