FarmFest 2014 opens at Fa Hui Park in Mong Kok (with photos)

FarmFest 2014, the largest outdoor farmers' market in Hong Kong, is being held at Fa Hui Park in Mong Kok from today (January 10) to January 12.

More than 300 stalls are showing a wide variety of local agricultural and fishery products and other related goods at the three-day carnival. The theme produce of this year are local organic sweet melon, edible mushrooms, hydroponic leafy vegetables and grouper.

In addition to some 200 booths selling premium local produce such as fresh organic fruit and vegetables, chilled fish, dried seafood and ornamental plants, there are booths selling live freshwater fish this year. Local delicacies, kitchenware, household goods and eco-friendly products are also available.

To tie in with the theme of this year, the event features a special kiosk displaying different varieties of mushroom, a protective structure in which the organic cultivation of sweet melon is demonstrated, and an outdoor field of fresh organic vegetables, fruits and herbs to give visitors an experience of nature in the heart of the city. Visitors can also learn more about common cultured groupers and aquaculture practices in Hong Kong at a simulated fish farm as well as observe the microscopic live feed for grouper fry.

Traditional shops selling local delicacies arranged in a nostalgic setting similar to the old Western Market is another attraction of the carnival.

FarmFest 2014 is also offering various fringe activities such as cultural performances, talks and cooking demonstrations for the enjoyment of people of all ages.

Admission is free. There is a free shuttle bus service every 15 minutes from Shek Kip Mei MTR Station exit B1.

The event is jointly organised by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, the Vegetable Marketing Organisation, the Fish Marketing Organisation and the Organising Committee of FarmFest 2014. First held in 2007, FarmFest has established itself as an annual signature event of the agricultural and fisheries sector that attracts a large number of visitors every year.
