The Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO), the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) and the Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Co-ordination Centre (HKCERT) co-organised a public seminar today (December 2) to share with the community prevailing trends of cyber security threats and best practices to protect information systems and assets from cyber attacks.
The full-day seminar is part of the Build a Secure Cyberspace 2013 campaign. Representatives from the Government, industry associations and solution providers gave presentations on a range of topics, including persistent and targeted attacks, secure use of electronic banking, security measures against website intrusion and protection of common computer platforms.
Speaking at the seminar, the Deputy Government Chief Information Officer (Consulting and Operations), Mr Victor Lam, said, "Once your computer or mobile device, such as smartphone or tablet, is connected to the Internet, hackers would have the chance to attempt to intrude into your system and steal your personal data for illicit purposes.
"Businesses and individuals should stay vigilant and take appropriate security measures to safeguard computing or mobile devices from cyber attacks. We should also keep abreast of technology development and equip ourselves with the latest knowledge on emerging security threats and protection," he said.
Build a Secure Cyberspace is an annual campaign jointly organised by the OGCIO, HKPF and HKCERT to raise public awareness of information security. It comprises a series of public engagement activities including school visits, seminars, radio programmes and competitions.
The theme of this year's campaign is "Protecting from Targeted AttacksĄ¨. A total of four public seminars have been held to provide the general public with knowledge in defending their devices against well-organised and targeted cyber attacks. A "Be a Smart Netizen" video contest was also organised and awards were presented at today's seminar.
