The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) today (October 22) announced the performance results of registered lift and escalator contractors for the past 12 months (i.e. from October 2012 to September 2013).

During this period, the EMSD conducted 9 689 inspections of lifts and escalators. A total of 18 registered lift contractors and 12 registered escalator contractors showed good performance with records of full compliance in both safety and maintenance aspects. The EMSD also issued four warning letters to four registered lift contractors and three warning letters to a single registered escalator contractor. There were nine reported lift incidents and five reported escalator incidents related to equipment failure.

The ratings results, summaries of the warning letters and equipment failure records are available at the EMSD's website (www.emsd.gov.hk/emsd/eng/pps/le_pub_mpr.shtml).

An EMSD spokesman said, "Members of the Lift and Escalator Safety Advisory Committee (LESAC) are now conducting a comprehensive review on the Contractors' Performance Rating scheme with a view to reflecting the performance of contractors in a more thorough and direct manner. The EMSD will continue to work closely with the LESAC to facilitate the review. Members of the public are welcome to give their views (email: info@emsd.gov.hk; fax: 2504 5970)."
